Hanuman meets Ruesi Narot

Hanuman tests Ruesi Narot's kindness
Once Hanuman had beaten and killed Phi Suea Samut, he mutated into his flying form, and, brandishing his trident, flew through the air until he reached Mount Solos (Solasa), which was in fact already beyond Langka island. Hanuman had mistaken the mountan for Mount Nilakala. As he flew, he noticed the roof of an Ashram - the Ashram was in fact none other than that of the Master Ruesi Narot (Narada). (Ruesi are called "Rishi" in India)

Ruesi narot (Narada)
Hanuman flew down to the ground and, casting magical incantations he turned himself into a small white monkey and approached the Ashram of Ruesi Narot and pretended to bow in reverence to the Hermit Sage or great renown.
Ruesi Narot saw the little monkey bowing, and asked hime "Who are you sir?" "Where do you come from? and what do you want here?"
Hanuman heard this, and rose his hands in reverence, replying "I sir, do not have a name!" "I was wandering in the forest and heard that Langka City was so large and grand, that i decided i would come to see it". "But i don't know how to get there - please can you tell me where it is?".
Ruesi Narot answered "You like to joke don't you little monkey? Why do you come and ask me what you already should know? can you not see that Mount Nilakala is right over there in the middle of that great city to the South East of here, can't you see it or what?".

Śrī Nārada Muni, the third preceptor of the Śr...
Hanuman was pleased to hear this helpful reply from the Hermit Sage; thus continued his testing and said "Oh kind and great Ruesi, please have mercy on me, for i have lost my way in the evening dusk, and now i am very tired and hungry. please let me stay and rest here for a while. I promise that in the morning when i am recovered i shall pay my respects and then leave".
Ruesi Narot believed Hanuman that he was a simple forest monkey, and agreed to let him stay the night at the Ashram. Hanuman bowed and followed the Ruesi to a room behind the main Ashram where the hermit Sage said he could rest.

Picture left; Narada, Deity of all musicians. Narada and Ruesi Narot are of course one and the same person.
Below Pic; Mural Painting showing various scenes of Hanuman's meeting with Ruesi Narot, and his subsequent stay at the Ashram of the Hermit Sage of great renown. From right to left, you can observe how Hanuman sees the Ashram from the sky, flies down and approaches the Ruesi disguised as a normal forest monkey, sits at the campfire chatting, and finally (middle image), lays his head to rest in a room of the Ashram

Hanuman began to wonder why the Ruesi wold choose to reside in Langka with the Yaksas; This Hermit Sage must have some kind of special powers or magical abilities. Hanuman decided he wanted to put this to the test, and see how powerful the Ruesi really was.

Pii Suea Samut

Hanuman Kills Phii Sua Samut; the Guardian of the Waters of Langka

Pii Suea Samut was a giant Yaksa; Totsagan had given her the task of being the guardian of the waters around Langka, and she patrolled the seas surrounding all entrances to the city, which was of course hidden to the eyes of potential invaders by the magical crystal parasol. She would not permit anyone to pass these waters and make the crossing to Langka wiithout permission to enter Langka. She was a fearsome Yaksa indeed, with fiery eyes and long tusks growing out of her mouth, which reached up to her eyes. As Hanuman flew over the waters on nis journey to find Naang Siidaa to give hter the ring and a message from Pra Ram, Phii Suea Samut saw him, and flung her great club at him, which smashed into Hanuman. Hanuman responded by flying down to her and attacked her with his "Dtri" (a small hand held trident, which was Hanuman's traditional weapon of preference). A furious fight ensued, and Phii Sue Samut tried with all her might to break Hanuman's resolve - Hanuman flew at her with his trident, and Phi Suea Samut craftily opened her gaping maw of a mouth to eat him. But to her surprise, Hanuman jumped forward and dashed into her mouth, crawling into her head, and ran hectically from left to right between her ears, bashing both ears with all his might, leaving her head ringing in pain. Then he ran down into her stomach and started kicking ad punching her insides. Phii Suea Samut was in such pain, and wanted Hanuman out of her body, but no matter how she tried she could not get him out from inside her.

Then Hanuman drew his trident and sliced her stomach open, throwing her intestines and guts out into the sea for the fish to eat, and sprang out to cut off her hands and arms, which he also threw to become fish food. In no time at all. Phii Suea Samut's lifeforce left her, and she died in the waters close to the banks of Langka Kingdom. Langka the Kingdom of Totsagan, had resoun for mourning this day, for they had lost their guardian of the ocean waters, which was one of their greatest defence strategies.

Phi Suea Samut also appears in the classic work of fictional literature by Thai author Suntorapu - Pra Apai Mani. All childern in Thailand haver to learn and study this piece of classic Thai Mythological literature, which features Himapant animals, Ruesi sages, Yaksas (such as Phi Suea Samut, Mermaids, and famous characters from Ramakian and Indian Vedic Lore

Important Events in Ramakian Ch.1

Tao Totsarot (called Dasaratha in Valmiki's Ramayana) was the the King of Ayuttaya father of Phra Ram. He rules the City of Ayodhyaya (Ayuttaya) and had a harem of three wives; Nang Kaosuriya, Nang Kaiyakesi and Nang Samut-Devi.
Tao Totsarot (Tao means lord), was the Ruler of the City of Ayuttaya in the Thai Ramakian epic adaptation of the Hindu Ramayana, written by Valmiki. He had three wives, namely Nang Kao Suriya, Nang Samut Devi and Nang Kaiyakesi. One time Tao Totsarot went to war with the Asura Yaksa Tudtatant, and the chariot wheel of Lord Totsarot was broken by the arrow of the asura. But one of his wives, Nang Kaiyakesi, who had accompanied him and was sat in the chariot, sprang down and stuck her arm in the axle of the wheel so that the chariot would still be able to move. When the battle was over and Tao Totsarot saw what his wife had done to help him, he was filled with love and affection for her, and promised to grant any wish that she may desire. After many years, Tao Totsarot was still without a child, and so arrange a magical ceremony to cook divine rice (Khaw Tip) to induce a child. In the city of Langka, Totsakan's wife Nang Montoe smelled it's divine aroma, and was filled with desire to eat some of it. She beseeched Totsakan and thus he sent his servant Kakanasura Yaksa turn herself into a crow and fly over to steal some, which she did.

Below Pic; Nang Kakanasura Yaksa

There were still however three pieces of divine rice left, which Tao Totsarot gave to his three wives; Nang Kao Suriya gave birth to Phra Ram, Nang Kayakesi gave birth to Phra Prot, and Nang Samut Devi to Phra Satrut. When the Yaksa Kakanasura returned to langka with the piece of divine rice she had stolen, she gave it to Totsakan, who took some and gave it to Nang Montoe, who then gave birth to a daughter, who cried out the words "destroy" three times at childbirth. As a result of this the court Astrologer, Pipek foretold that she was the incarnation of Kali the destroyer and would cause the end of the yaksa (Asura) race. So Totsakan decreed to have the baby child taken and placed into a pot and thrown in the river, where she floated downstream until she was discovered by the Ruesi hermit Chanaka (Chanok, in Thai), who was actually the ruler of Mithila city practising austerities in the forest for a while, before he would return to rule the city once more. Chanaka then took the baby girl and placed her under a tree in the earth and let mother earth watch over her until the end of his practise in the forest, which took 16 years to complete. Once he was ready to resturn to rule Mithila, he performed a ritual to recall the child from under the earth and gave her the name "Siidaa" (Sita). Chanaka then returned to trule Mithila and announced a competition to lift the molee bow. Whoever should be able to lift it would recieve nang Siidaa's hand in marriage and become ruler of Mithila. In Ayuttaya city, the news of the competition came, and Tao Totsarot encouraged his three sons, Phra Ram, Phra Lak and Phra Satrut to participate. On arrival in Mithila, Phra Ram happened to see Nang Siidaa looking out of the window, and the two of them fell in love instantly. Phra Ram was able to lift the molee bow, successfully using only one hand, and won the hand of Siidaa in marriage. It was here that treachery came into play, causing the sequence of events that led to the kidnapping of Nang Siidaa by her estranged father (the fact that her kidnapper Totsakan is her father is strangely neither directly mentioned nor intended to make obvious in the Ramakian), and lead to the war between Totsakan and Phra Ram, which is the main plot of the whole epic story;

Below pic - Nang Kuchee Kom

As Phra Ram (Rama) was about to be crowned Ruler of the City of Ayuttaya (Ayodhaya), Nang Kaiyakesi was begged to intervene by her servant Nang Kucheekom, who was once teased by Pra Ram and had held a grudge against him for many years. Nang Kaiyakesi thus conceded Nang Kucheekom's request, and beseeched Lord Totsarot to keep his promise of granting the wish, sending Phra Ram to the forest and Crowning her own son Phra Prot in his stead.

Lord Totsarot was heartbroken, but conceded as promised.Phra Ram heard the news and decided to leave on his own accord, and was accompanied by Nang Siidaa. When Tao Totsarot heard the news of Phra Ram's disappearance, he fell into a great depression, and died. Whilst on his deathbead, he decreed with his dying wish, that both Nang Kaiyakesi, and her son Phra Prot should not be permitted to participate in his cremation ceremony.

Pra Ram meets Kumpala

Continued from "Nok Sadayu Saves Siidaa"
Kumpalayaksa
There Was a Yaksa Giant called Kumpala; Kumpalayaksa was cursed by Pra Isworn* to have only a torso, arms and head, but no legs. He had to stay motionless in the same place on the stump of his torso. His mouth was open wide and large as a cave, his eyes red and bright as the sun. His curse forced him to only be permitted to eat the animals which came within the reach of his arms.

Pra Ram Meets Kumpala
When the blazing heat of day lessened and the cool evening dusk arrived, Pra Ram and Pra Laks left the shade of the mangrove trees and stumbled into the reach of Kumpalayaksa's arms.
The hungry Asura** was delighted at this, as he had not eaten human flesh since a long time, and so thought to catch both of them and eat them. But however fearless and treacherous he might be, he was filled with a strange premonition that this was the Avatar (incarnation) of Pra Naray (Vishnu), born to raze the world of the Yaksa race. So he decided to ask a few questions first from the two Princes to determine if this was the case. "Who are you people?, where are you going?" he asked - "And why are you travelling through my Kingdom?, and why are you Princes ordained as Ruesi Hermits?".

Then Pra Ram told him of all the events that had come to pass and of Totsagan stealing the Lady Siidaa, and how he was on Totsagan's tail to retrieve his love and to kill him. He then asked Kumpala if Totsagan had passed by, which way Totsagan had gone. He also asked the way to Langka. In addition, Pra Ram enquired as to why Kumpala had only a body and no legs.

Once it was clear to see that Pra Ram was the Avatar of Pra Naray, Kumpala bowed in reverence to the two Princes, and introduced himself "I am Kumpalayaksa, and have been cursed by Pra Isworn" "I used to be the servant of Pra Isworn, but one day i was overcome with naughtiness and trapped and teased Nang Nilamalee." "When Pra Isworn heard of my deed, he was enraged and threw his chakra disc weapon and cut my body in half and cursed me to be trapped in this place and only be able to eat what i can catch within the reach of my hands".

Kumpala then told Pra Ram that Totsagan had flown past with Nang Siidaa in a Southwesterly direction and had returned to Langka.. Pra Ram asked for the directions to langka and how far it was. Kumpala answered that it was difficult to say how far due to the magical nature of it's location, but that however near or far it may be, that the way would be extreme and full of hardships. Kumpala told them that when they had reached the cities of Kheed Khin and Chompoo, they should ask the ruler of the two Vanora cities, Pali, for help. They would then recieve support from the monkey armies of both cities, enabling them to reach the city of Langka. Then Kumpala asked Pra Ram to help him to end his curse and be reborn as the servant of Pra Isworn once more.
Pra Ram felt sorry for Kumpala and thus rose his bow and Brahmasastra arrow and shot him; Kumpala died from the shot and his spirit was sent back to the heavens to serve Pra Isworn again.
*Pra Isworn is the Thai name for Shiva

**Yaksas are of the Asura classification of sentient beings in both the Buddhist and Hindu belief systems. There are 6 general realms of beings; 1.Hell beings 2. Hungry Ghosts (Petas), 3. Animals, 4. Humans, 5. Asuras (monsters) and 6. Heavenly beings (these are then subdivided into further sub-classifications, such as the Deva realm, the Brahma realm..)

Hanuman meets Sampatee

Hanuman meets Nok Sampatee

Synopsis; Hanuman follows the orders of Ruesi Chadila and travels to the hematiran cave, meets Nok Sampatee and reveals the death of his brother Nok Sadayu - Hanuman cures sampatee of his curse, and Sampatee carries hanuman to see the location of Langka and Hanuman decides to travel there alone.

The Ruesi Chadila had told Hanuman that the way to Langka was still a very long way away, and that he should travel to a mountain known as Mount Hematiran, and from there, he would be able to find a way to cross to Langka. On recieving this message, Hanuman immediately set out to search for Mount Hematiran. When the vanora army arrived there, Hanuman ordered them to climb up to the top of the mountain. By this time, it was already evening, and rather dark, but they still followed hanuman's orders, and climbed up in a hurry to find the mouth of a cave. They were able to find it because of the light shed from the glistening buttons of Hanuman's earrings. Once they arrived at the mouth of the cave, Hanuman ordered the Vanora monkey army to halt, for he didn't know what to do next. The sky clouded over, and the starts scattered from sight, Hanuman stretched out his hand, and felt the cold rain that was dripping down from the sky; The Vanora felt freezing cold , but Hanuman bravely told Ongkot and Chompoopan that no matter how difficult the task may seem, they must find a way to get to the lady Sida (in Thai it is pronounced withh long vowels as "Seedaa", or Siidaa"). He told them that even if they were all to die, they must keep their honor, just as the bird Nok Sadayu had done, when he gave his life to protect Lady Sida and fought against Totsagan. Unknown to the Vanora, the bird Sampatee, who had been cursed by Pra Isworn to have to remain watching over the cave which the Vanora were camped outside of, was listening. When Sampatee heard Hanuman mention the name of Nok Sadayu (who was in fact the younger brother of Sampatee), and that Nok sadayu had died, he was shocked and wanted to go out and enquire about the circumstances of his brother's death. As he began walking from the depths of the cave towards the entrance to his cursed abode, the sound of his great feet on the stones made a great rumbling sound, and the ground shook.

The vanora were startled and began to scatter, running around in every direction to escape what was surely to be some kind of terrible monster approaching.
As Sampatee arrived at the opening to the cave, he saw three monkeys who were not running around sitting there, and thus asked them who had killed his brother Nok Sadayu. So Hanuman told Nok Sampatee about the events leading to his brother's death, and how the demon Totsagan had tricked him abd killed him in a cowardly manner; He told of Nok sadayu's great bravery and merit in sacrificing himself to try to save lady Sida, due to his great love and loyalty to Pra Ram and his father Tao Totsarot.

Upon hearing this, Nok Sampatee was filled with grief and cried, tears dripping from his eyes in sadness. Hanuman comforted Sampatee with the truth of the Dharma that, no living being escapes death and that it is the nature of the world that all who are born into existence must one day die. Hanuman explained that no matter how much Sampatee would cry, that not even all the tears of the world would bring Nok Sadayu back. When Sampatee's tears had subsided, Hanuman asked Sampatee why his feathers wer all falling out. Sampatee then spoke; "I am Nok sampatee, the older brother of Nok sadayu, and we lived on the top of Mount Alasakanna. One day we woke up in the early hours and the Sun was rising; Sudayu thought that the Sun was a semi ripe fruit and wanted to eat it, and flew up to peck at the Chariot of the Sun. The Sun was enraged at Sudayu and began to radiate an immense flame around him with a blinding light. I saw this happening and flew up to protect my young brother, and this is how my feathes fell out and became tattered. In addition, the Sun God cursed me and sent me to live in the Cave of Hematiran, never to leave until i should meet the soldiers of Pra Ram as they crossed to Langka, to give the ring to Nang Sida. The monkeys should cheer three times, and this shall break the spell and my feathers will grow again as once before. When Hanuman heard this, he called all the Vanora soldiers to gather and assist to raise three cheers for Sampatee, which they of course did according to orders.... Sampatee's feathers sprouted and grew all over his body, radiant and plush, as once they had been in the past. Sampatee then flew up into the air to test his flying abilities with his newly regained feathers, flew around for a while in joy, and then landed again in front of Hanuman. Hanuman then asked Nok Sampatee for directions to Langka. Sampatee then explained that Langa was situated in the middle of a massive river, and that only he who could fly or levitate was able to reach it. In addition it was still a very long way away, and so Sampatee offered to let them climb on his back and he would fly nearer to Langka so he could show them and point the way for his armies to travel. So hanuman, Chompoopan and Ongkot climbed upon Sampatee's back and flew with him to Mount Kantasinkhara, where they landed and Sampatee pointed over the waters, and explained that Langka was in the middle of the great river they wer seeing, but that it was barely visible like a glass in the water.

He told them that there was a gigantic mountain in the middle of the city of Langka called Nilakala. The three vanore tried to help each opther in remembering the place where sampatee had indicated that the invisible city was located, and asked Sampatee to fly back to Mount Hematiran immediately. When they arrived there, Hanuman suggested to Chompoopan and Ongkot that "We three are all able to cross to langka, for we are able to levitate; but our armies are unable to make the crossing in this way. For this reason, i myself shall go alone to langka to find lady Sida, whilst you two remain here at the mouth of the cave and take cer of the army until i return". Hanuman also beseeched Sampatee to help watch over the armies of Pra Ram until his return. Then he rose into the air and flew off towards Langka.

Suwanamajcha - Majchanu

Nang Suwanamajcha has a creamy white skin, Concubine of the Monkey general Hanuman, Her torso is Human, and her lowr body part is that of a fish. Suwannamajcha is perhaps one of the earliest depictions of a mermaid, if not the earliest.
Nang Suwanamajcha

As Pra Ram was making his way to Langka with his Vanora army (monkey army), he ordered Hanuman and the monkey soldier Nilapatra to take his soldiers and throw stones into the sea to make a land bridge across the straits to langka. Totsagan ordered his servant Nang Suwanamajcha to take her fish entourage and move the stones that hanuman's army were piling up in the ocean out of the way, in order to make Pra Ram's plan fail. But Hanuman was suspicious as to why the stones didn't seem to be getting any higher no matter how many they threw in, so he dove under the water, where he discovered the schools of fish carrying the stones away, with nang Suwanamajcha in commmand.

Hanuman became angry and pulled out his trident weapon and killed Suwanamajcha. But as soon as Hanuman calmed down he felt sorry for nang Suwanamajcha and revived her, taking her as his wife. Nang Suwanamajcha then ceased to serve totsagan and stopped obstructing the construction of the land bridge to Langka.

Shortly afterwards, she gave birth to a son, whose body was that of a monky, with a fishes tail. The name of this son born of the consummation of nuptials between hanuman and Suwanamajcha was; majchanu. Majcha means fish in pali, and the "anu"
part of his name comes, of course, from his father "Hanuman".

Ramasun and nang Maekhala

Ramasun sees Nang Maekhala playing in the clouds with her magical crystal; desires to posess it and chases her. Unable to catch neither Nang Maekhala nor the crystal, Ramasun becomes angry and throws his magical axe.

ramasun nang maekhala

Nang Maekhala

White in color, she is the daughter of Paya Mangorn (dragon king of the Oceans) - she posesses a character which likes to sing and dance and travel around seeing places. Her father Paya mangorn took her and offered her to Phra Intr (the God indra), along with the gift of a magical crystal. Then Phra Intr elected her to be the guardian of the great Oceans, and gave her the job of helping sailors whose ships were damaged and preventing them from sinking. Nang Maekhala would spend a period of seven days at a time travelling around in the sky playing in the cloud, whereupon she would take one day out of every seven to come down and check over the oceans to see if there were any ships or sailors in need of her assistance, in which case she would help accordingly.

Ramasun

Ramasun is a Yaksa; green in color with bulging eyes and a grimacing mouth. he wears the crown of the "Mongud gaap pai" type. His weapons are the arrow and a diamond axe. He has a very cheeky and daring personality. He lives in the clouds in the sky. One day Ramasun took his axe and was flying through the clouds, when he saw Nang Maekhala playing in the clouds, throwing her magic crystal and catching it again in the air. He felt a great desire to posess this crystal, and so attempted to steal it from her. However he tried, Ramasun was unable to win the crystal from Nang Maekhala, being too fast and agile for him. She teased him by holding the crystal between her fingers in one hand, dancing and beckoning him to come and get it. Ramasun became very angry and threw his axe at her repeatedly, but no matter how he tried he was powerless to catch her and she was easily able to avoid his axe every time he threw it. He tried to chase after her for a long time but finally had to give up because of her agility and the power of her magic crystal.

Folk in olden times believed that the sound of thunder was the sound of Ramasun's diamond axe being thrown, and that lightning flashes were the blinking flashes coming from Nang Maekhala's magical crystal as she threw it through the clouds to tease Ramasun. The sound of thunderclaps was believed to be the sound of the diamond axe colliding with nang Maekhala's magic crystal..

Pra Orachun (Arjuna)

Above pic; Pra Orachun with Pra Gritsana (Arjuna and Krishna) - Orachun is the figure to the left with the arrow quiver on his back. Arjuna appears in the Hindu "Mahabharata" epic as Krishnas companion.

As Ramasun was unsuccessfully chasing Nang Maekhala, Pra Orachun flew in front of him, and he became extremely angry and offended, accusing Pra Orachun of being disrespectful and insulting him. A fight ensued between the two; Pra Orachun hovered above Ramasun and climbed onto his shoulders, taking his sword and stabbing at Ramasun.

But Ramasun was quick to defend and rose his axe to block the blow, pulling Pra Orachun down from his shoulders. He then grabbed Pra Orachun by the legs and swung him round to fling him against "Pra Sumen" (mount Meru). The force of his throw and the subsequent collision caused Pra Sumen to lean to one side, killing Pra Orachun instantly.
Another appearance of Ramasun in the Ramakian was an instance when he attacked Pra Ram (Rama), but was unable to compete with him at al. This resulted in Ramasun offering his arrow as a gift in respect to Pra Ram. Pra Ram took this arrow and gave it to Pra Pirun to look after, with the condition that whenever Pra Ram should call out to him, then Pra Pirun, should throw it down to him from the sky.

Pra Pirun in Thai Buddhist belief is considered to be an assitant to Pra Intr (Indra) and the God of Rain. The statue of Pra Pirun riding a Naga which is so famous in Thailand is the monument of the University of Agriculture, because the rain is such a key aspect for the growing of crops. His duty is to ensure the rains fall at the appropriate time according to the seasons. At the start of the rainy season, pra Pirun should be revered with a ceremony to call for the rains in order to irrigate the crops successfully and ensure a good harvest.

The Fathering of Hanuman

(Ruesi Kodom part 2)
Nang Swaha and Phra Pay (Vayu) bring Hanuman into the World

When Phra Isworn (Shiva) learned of Nang Swaha being Cursed by Nang Kala Acana , he ordered Phra Pay (known as "Vayu" the god of the wind, in Hindu India),
to take his Cosmic weapons, and throw it into the mouth of Nang Swaha, in order to make her become pregnant with a monkey as a child. This was attained by using the kata (sword) as the backbone of the child, the Trident as his torso, arms and legs, and the Chakra disc was used for his head. Phra Isworn asked Phra Pay to take care of Nang Swaha as much as he could and to Adopt the child in her womb as his son too.

When Nang Swaha had been carrying the child in her womb for over 30 months, in the Year of Khala on the third month,on a Tuesday, she gave birth to her child. The birth was unusual in the sense that the child emerged by jumping out of his mother's mouth! He appeared in the form of a monkey, with white fur covering his entire body. He was fully grown with the body of a young boy of the age of 16. In order to emerge, he used supernatural powers to float in the air, transforming himself into a four faced, eight armed monkey, complete with ear rings, diamond fur, and crystal fangs.

He yawned, and the moon and stars came out of his mouth. He then flew down and rose his hands to his forehead in respect to his parents. Phra Pay then gave him his name, which we now know from the Hindu Brahmin pantheon to be "Hanuman".
Hanuman then left his Mother and Father to reside in solitary in the forest. One day, he was occupied in gathering fruits in the garden of Phra Uma (Kali), who was the Concubine of Phra Isworn (Shiva). Kali cursed Hanuman to have his powers and strength reduced by one half, but Hanuman begged forgiveness, and explained that he didn't know that the fruits belonged to her. Phra Uma thus removed the curse, by prophecying that when Hanuman would eventually meet Phra Ram, who would then stroke his back and tail, that his powers would then be returned to their fullness.

Later, Hanuman's Father Phra Pay took him to see Phra Isworn, who taught him a Kata to make himself disappear with, and also gave him a blessing that; Whenever Hanuman would be killde by his enemy, he would be instantly revived as soon as the wind blew on him. He then showed Hanuman and another monkey, called "Chompoopan", a host of secrets in the art of healing herbs and medicines (Phra Isworn created Chompoopan himself from his own sweat). The two vanora were then sent to stay with their Uncles; Praya Kakasa and Sukreep, in the City of KheedKhin

Hanuman Yawning at the moon (Birth scene), is seen depicted in the below image being tattooed as a Sak Yant tattoo

Ruesi Kodom

Ruesi Kodom and the Birth of Nang Swaha
How Nang Swaha came into existence, and the events leading up to the creation of the City of Kheed Khin, the Kingdom of Vanora, and how the Monkey Kings Kaakaasa and Sukreep came into being;

Lord Kodom was the ruler of Saged kingdom. He didn't have a Son to be Heir to the throne, and his daughter was rather disinterested and bored with the idea of power and posessions. Thus, the lord Kodom ordained as a Ruesi Hermit sage and journeyed out into the forest, where he remained practising austerities, and keeping precepts for many years. So long did he stay there, that his beard became extremely long and unruly; tangled like a bale of straw, and his ability in Jhana meditation became very advanced.
One day, a pair of birds (Nok Grajaab), came and made their nest in the Ruesi Kodom's tangled beard. One day, the female bird laid eggs in the nest, and the male bird flewout to hunt for prey, and spent the whole day pecking at lotuses to eat the pollen. As he was pecking inside one of the flowers, the sun went down, and the lotus closed on the bird, imprisoning him until dawn. When dawn came, the lotu flower opened to recieve the sunlight, and the bird was able to fly up and away home. As he arrived, the female bird accued him of being unfaithful and that she thought he had spent the night with another bird. The male bird denied the accusation, and told the truth of the matter; that he had been trapped inside a lotus flower all night. But the female bird did not believe him, so to assure her, the male bird said that if he was lying, then he should recieve all the bad karma of the past actions of the Ruesi Kodom as his own.

The Ruesi heard this being said by the bird, and thus commented; "You are prepared to take on the results of my Karma? Then you think i should have some bad karma sticking to me do you?" The bird replied "Yes! you have bad Karma, because you are the ruler of a Kingdom with no Heir, and ran away to become a hermit Ruesi, leaving the Kingdom to be without a ruler in future". Upon hearing this, Lord Kodom saw the truth of the matter, and thus cut off his beard and long hair, burning it in a fire. He then sat in meditation of Jhana absorbtion and cast a Kata (mantra) incantation, chanting it one thousand times; A beautiful maiden was born from the flames of the fire, and the Lord Kodom named her Kala Acana. Kala Acana then remained with the Ruesi until a child was born from them. The child was a daughter named "Swaha" (Nang Swaha was later to become the Mother of Hanuman).

Some years later, The Lord Indra (Phra Intr) became aware that the Yaksa Nontuk had been reborn on Earth as the demon Totsagan, and that Phra Narayn (Vishnu) was about to be reborn as Phra Ram (Rama). So he thought of incarnating too in the form of a soldier, in order to help Phra Ram defeat Totsagan. As he made this decision, the Ruesi Kodom was gathering fruits in the forest and at a distance from his wife Nang Kala Acana, so Phra Intr flew down and snatched her, taking her as his consort for a while and consummating to inseminate her. After 10 months, a baby boy was born, green skinned like his father Phra Intr.

After some time "Phra Atidt" (Phra Atidt means "Sun" in Thai, but is also a deity in the Ramakian), got the same idea as Phra Intr, and decided to incarnate a part of his self to become a soldier in aid of Phra Ram to help defeat Totsagan. So once more, as the Ruesi Kodom was gathering fruits in the forest and at a distance from his wife Nang Kala Acana, Phra Atidt flew down and snatched her, taking her as his consort for a while and consummating to inseminate her. After 10 months, a baby boy was born, red skinned like his father Phra Atidt.

Some years later, the Ruesi Kodom took his wife and children to bathe in the riverbank to coll off from the heat; he carried his youngest son under his right arm,and his daughter walked holding his lef hand. His oldest son was allowed to ride on his back. His daughter, Nang Swaha exclaimed in protest "Father! Why do you love the children of another?" "What do you mean my love?", asked the Ruesi, confused. "As you were in the forest, there were two men came and stayed in the Kuti (shed) with mother".

The Ruesi Kodom thus desired to know for sure which of the children were his real children, and which were born of another father, so he performed a divination ceremony, along with the casting of a spell; "Let my real child be able to swim across the river and return to me, but let those who are not born of my seed be unable to swim across, and also be turned into monkeys and remain in the forest!". As he cast the spell, he threw the three children across the river into the water at the far shore.Nang Swaha was able to swim back, but the two boys were unable to make it, and transformed into monkeys, fleeing into the forest. Phra Intr and Phra Atidt saw the Ruesi Kodom curse their children to suffer as monkeys in the forest, and thus created a city for them to rule in. This city was called "Kheed Khin"; Phra Intr's son was named "Kaakaas" (Other sources say it was "Pali") and was the ruler, and Phra Atidt's son was named "Sukreep" and was the the general, ruling over the cohorts of Vanora soldiers, who were great in numbers.

Sukreep later played an important role in the battle against the Yaksa king Totsagan on the side of Phra Ram, alongside Hanuman.

nang swaha swims across the river to ruesi kodom

When the Ruesi Kodom returned to the Guti, he was so angry with Nang Kala Acana, that he cursed her and turned her into stone - sending her to remain under the ocean. After a long time, Phra Narayn came down to Earth from Heaven, and took the stone from under the Ocean and placed it along the road that crossed to Langka. Nang Kala Acana was thus released from her curse.Nang Kala Acana was so infuriated with her daughter Nang Swaha for telling her father Ruesi Kodom about her infidelity, that she subsequently cursed her to stand on one leg like a tree branch in the forest, with her mouth wide open and consume only air. Only when she should give birth to a child that was a monkey should she be released.

Hanuman stretches his tail

The Vanora King (Hanuman) enlarges himself and uses his tail to stretch across the river, for the Vanora soldiers of Phra Ram's army to use as a bridge to cross with.
After freeing the Yaksa Phaklan from his curse in pandta lake, the three Vanora warriors (Ongkot, Hanuman and Chompoopan) journeyed onwards and came to the kingdom of Mayan, where they encountered the lady Nang Busamalii. Nang Busamalii gave them the necessary directions to continue the journey to Langka, and they continued their travels. Along the way, they met lady Nang Suwannamalii, who told them to cross the sea andonce having reached the other shore, should find and ask the Ruesi Hermit Chadila for further information as to how to reach the City of Langka.

Once Hanuman had succeeded in taking the Vanora army across the sea, he rushed to the Ruesi Chadila and asked for directions; Chadila explained that they should travel to Mount Hmedtiran, which was the bridge-port to Langka, and the vanora legions set off to the next destination on the quest to Langka. On the way, Hanuman came across Nang Busamalii, who was cursed by phra Isworn (Lord Shiva), to be forced to watch over a small palace. When Nang Busamalii discovered that the Vanora were the soldiers of Phra Ram, she immediately told them which path to take on their journey onwards to Langka. Hanuman then took nang Busamalee as his Consort (wife) - she was his first wife in the story (Hanuman had a casanova like personality and took more than one concubine in the ramakian story). The Monkey general then removed the curse of Phra Isworn and threw Nang Busamalii high up into the sky until she reached the celestial realms, where she landed and was able to remain. Consequently, The three vanora soldiers encountered nang Suwannamalii, who had been sent by Phra Isworn to await their arrival, in order to assist them in pointing the way on to Langka.

On receiving the necessary directions and information, the three monkey warriors crossed to the other shores and found Chadila Ruesi, who agreed on being their guide and travelled along with them to point out the way. At this point, hanuman performed a miracle (Nimit gay - นิมิตกาย increased in size), and used his gigantic tail as a bridge to allow the regiments of Vanora soldiers to cross the waters to meet with the Ruesi.

Nang Kuchee Kom

This is Nang Kuchee Kom - servant of nang Kaiyakaesi - Nang Kuchee Kom was responsible for nang kayakaesi requesting Tao Tosarot to banish his Son and Heir to the Throne (Phra Ram) replacing him with Nang Kaiyakaesi's son Pra Prodt. In the Indian version of Ramayana, she is called Nang Montra - In Sanskrit, the word Kuchee means "hunchbacked", which is called "Kom" in Thai. So the Thai name for her became "Nang Kuchee Kom"
You can read about her in her role in the story, in the episode "Tao Totsarot dies brokenhearted"

Tao Totsarot - ท้าวทศรถ

Tao Totsarot is the father of Phra Ram. Tao Tosarot is the Son of Tao Achabala, who in turn came from Tao Anomatan, who was born from the Lotus in Phra Nayn's (Vishnu) belly, as the boy Kumara, and later became Tao Anoamatan. Tao Tosarot has one face, two arms and the crown with the "mongkut dern hon" type of "Yord" (spike). Dern Hon means to travel around - meaning he is wearing the headress of travelling the forest. His Father is Tao Achabala and Mother is Nang Tep Absorn. He rules the City of Ayodhyaya (Ayuttaya) and has 3 Concubines; Nang Gao Surya, Nang Gayagaesi and Nand Samutra Tewi.
One time the God Phra Intr (Indra) called upon Tao Totsarot to help in defeating the Demon Yaksa Batudtatantayaksa, and he took Nang Gaiyagesi into battle with him. When his chariot wheel broke, nang Gayagesi offered her own hand in lace of the wheel, and Tao Tosarot was thus able to defeat Batudtatantayaksa. As a thanks for this great act of selflessness and sincerity, Tao Tosarot offered nang gayagesi anything she wished in exchange for her effort.
As Phra Ram was about to be crowned Ruler of the City, Nang Gaiyagesi asked Lord Totsarot to return the favour and send Phra Ram to the forest and Crown Phra Phrot (her son) instead. Lord Totsarot was heartbroken, but conceded as promised, but he died of a broken heart, and also left his dying wish that neither Nang Gayagesi nor Phra Phrot were allowed to light the funeral pyre.

Phaklan and the Lake of a Thousand Tears

Hanuman searches for the way to Langka for the troops of Phra Ram to follow. Ongkot and Chompoopan accompany him on the Reconnaissance mission

As Hanuman, Ongkot and Chompoopan were travelling on the way to Langka, they came across the lake of the demon Phaklan, who was once a servant of Phra Isworn, in the days before the Yaksa were flung down from Heaven. He made the mistake of having a secret affair with Nang Gaesoramala, and was thus cursed by Phra Isworn to guard the Lake of a thousand Eyes (sra Pandta - สระพันตา). As th three Vanora soldiers arrived on the scene, Phaklan and the Monkeys clashed immediately in battle, ongkot kicking, Chompoopan slicing and hanuman hitting from all sides. Phaklan became so wounded and tired that he ran around trying to escape, until finally, out of breath, he raised his hands in reverence and asked "who are you, who have beaten me?".
Once it became clear that they were the 3 soldiers of Phra Ram, Phaklan told them of the spell to break his curse that told of three soldiers of Phra Ram coming and stroking his back, releasing him from the spell of the ancient curse holding him at the lake of a thousand tears. He then begged Ongkot to stroke his back, which Ongkot kindly conformed with. Phaklan mutated immediately into the form of a Deva, and flew up into the Heavens straight away, released from his curse. After this the three Vanora heroes continued their journey onwards to the town of Mayan... Continue reading what happened to the three Vanora on the rest of the Journey to0 Langka

Wirunjampang

This is Wirun Jampang, one of the characters appearing in Ramakian Epic Tale. Wirun Jampang is a Yaksa, normally anchor-grey whitish color but this is often variable, as seen in the above pic, where he is depicted in green. He is the son of "Paya Taksa Kasatriya" (พญาทูษณ์กษัตริย์) of Jaruek City. This makes him a nephew of Totsagan.
Normally depicted in Traditional Art with a grimacing mouth, known as "Phak Khob" - the eyes are drawn in the "Dta Jorakhae" style (crocodile eyes), meaning slightly slitted. He has a companion which is a horse, names Nilapahu; This horse has the amazing power of being able to disappear and reappear at will.
Wirunjampang raised his armies in Alliance to Totsagan, and entered into the War with Phra Ram, and was responsible for the death of a great number of Hanuman's army of Vanoras. He did this by joining forces on the way with Lord Sadtasura of Asadong (ท้าวสัทธาสู เมืองอสดง). They laid such waste to the Vanora Monkeys, that all seemed to be lost for Phra Ram's Army.
The turncoat Yaksa Seer Bhibeka (Pipek) was the one to advice Phra Ram to shoot his arrow and kill the horse Nilapahu. This he did, shooting the Brahmamastra arrow into the horse, who died instantly. This caused Wirunjampang to flee, casting a spell into his headscarf, and making a puppet identical to himself as a decoy, giving the chance to escape. He then met Naang Waanarin (นาง วานรินทร์) in a cave in the deep forest, who told him he would be safe hiding himself within a water bubble. But Phra Ram was clever, and shot another arrow, which metamorphosed into a diamond net, revealing the real image behind all mirages and illusions. He then sent Hanuman to search for Wirunjampang whilst the veil was lifted. Hanuman the clever monkey, searched the area thoroughly, and found his hiding place, killing him on the spot with the usual ease that Hanuman enjoys in his adventures.
